John Storey
Joined NYBBGB in 1992 aged 16. I joined the band to further develop my skills and play along side talented young musicians.
The band helped me develop my playing and enhanced the experience I gained at music college, building confidence in performance. This helped my ability to perform under pressure, helping me be successful in my audition to join the British Army and the Band of the Coldstream Guards shortly after graduating from Huddersfield University.
This confidence in performance following my time in the NYBBGB has in part enabled me to enjoy a successful and long career in the Royal Corps of Army Music.
There are many memories from my four years at NYBBGB but one memory that stands out, is playing under great conductors and tutors throughout my time in the band. One conductor in particular that made a lasting impression was the late Bramwell Tovey, who I was privileged to work with again in 2013 when playing with the RPO Brass.
The band’s performance on Blue Peter really stood out for me along with performing Respighi’s Roman Festival arr. Howard Snell & Chi by Gary Carpenter.
