Born in Hong Kong, Camille Chiu (25) is currently studying for an MMus in music composition and performance at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, with percussion as her major instrument. Camille plays in all kinds of settings, from solo performances to chamber ensembles, orchestras and brass bands. As a composer, her music is inspired by everyday life and nature, often incorporating daily objects and experimenting with unique sounds and techniques. Whether performing or composing, Camille is always curious about discovering new ways to express ideas through contemporary and interdisciplinary creation.
Storms Of Light is an exciting brass band piece that explores the beauty of solar storms and their effects on Earth: aurora borealis. Inspired by the fast-moving charged particles from the sun, the music captures the vibrant colours of the aurora that light up the polar skies. The work features rhythmic patterns, triplets and quick chromatic runs that mimic the dynamic movement of solar flares and the rapid spread of energy in space. Each section reflects a distinctive status of solar activity, creating a colourful, contrasting and engaging sound. With its use of different musical modes and shifts in tonality, the music brings to life the swirling patterns of the aurora, inviting listeners to experience the wonder of these natural light displays.
