The National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain Weston Conductors' Competition Rules

1. All participants must be aged 20 or over and 30 or under on 1st January 2022.

2. Round 1 will be assessed by submission of video and interview on Zoom.

The deadline for video submission is now closed.  Videos should not exceed 10 minutes in duration. The videos can feature rehearsals, concerts or competition performances. Six candidates will be selected to proceed to Round 2. Rounds 2 and 3 will take place on the 29th January 2022 and involve rehearsing a full brass band made up of players from the NYBBGB.

3. Round 2 will be held live at De Montfort School, Evesham and the six conductors will be judged by a panel of judges

Judges include Martyn Brabbins, Dr Robert Childs and Captain Samuel Hairsine RM. Candidates will be asked to prepare three well known brass band marches:

  • Shipley Douglas - March Mephistopheles
  • George Allan - March Knight Templar
  • William Rimmer - March The Cossack

4. Candidates will be given 20 mins to rehearse one of the marches

Candidates will be given 20 mins to rehearse one of the marches and will be told on the day which march they should conduct. Three candidates will be selected to proceed to the Final Round. 

5. The Final Round will take place on the same day as Round 2. 

The Finalists will be judged by a panel including Martyn Brabbins, Dr Robert Childs and Captain Samuel Hairsine RN. Candidates will be will given 40 mins to rehearse one of the following well known brass band works:

  • Eric Ball - Resurgam
  • Phillip Sparke - Music for a Festival
  • Peter Graham - Shine as the Light

Candidates will be told on the day which piece they will conduct. Candidates in Round 2 should prepare all six set-works. The three finalists’ set-works and running order is drawn by lot at the end of Round 2.

Application requirements

1. You must scan and upload an image of your passport's information page for verification purposes.

2. Round 1: by 8th October 2021 you should:

  • Submit a short biography outlining your experience and ambition (max. 5000 characters), including your recent place(s) of study and/or the name of your teacher(s) as well as a concise list of recent and forthcoming engagements
  • Submit a video of yourself conducting. The video must not exceed 10 minutes
  • The NYBBGB will contact you to arrange a Zoom conversation with Dr Robert Childs (Director of Artistic Planning).

3. Entry is free of charge. 

4. Please be aware that the Final of the Competition will be recorded for online streaming.

By entering the Competition you are giving your consent for your performance, should you reach the Final Round, to be filmed and streamed online. All rights will be owned by the NYBBGB in perpetuity.

6. First prize will be an invitation to work as the Associate Conductor

First prize will be an invitation to work as Associate Conductor alongside maestro Martyn Brabbins and the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain during their 2022 summer residential course at Taunton School between 30th July and 6th August 2022. The winner will also conduct a work at the NYBBGB’s 70th Anniversary concert on 6th August in London.

7. The winner will receive a fee of £500 to work alongside and be tutored by Martyn Brabbins
